Life and the Cafe Latte

When you rise and shine early in the AM, what is the first thing that pops into your head? Okay, after you've gone to the bathroom. For many of us it's a nice fresh cup of coffee. Ah yes, you can smell that aroma as it calls you to the kitchen.

Or actually to the drive-thru would be more accurate in this day and age. Every man and woman across the country is craving that tasty cafe latte coffee. A new era in java is certainly in full swing these days. Although I watched my parents resort to a drip coffee pot the entire time I grew up, an espresso machine is what rests on my kitchen counter. This way each and every morning and afternoon I can kick back and relax with an iced vanilla latte coffee.

Yep, that's my favorite. Don't we all have that ideal caffeinated beverage that we crave on a daily basis? What's you favorite cafe latte?

The Basic Cafe Latte recipe:

2 (1 1/4-ounce) shots espresso, hot
12 ounces milk, steamed to 150 degrees

First, pour both espresso shots into the bottom of a cup. Add steamed milk until cup is 3/4 full, holding back the foam. Top off the drink with velvet foam from steamed milk.

Making a flavored latte at home
With an espresso machine: Steam together Torani and milk. Pour into a tall glass and add espresso. Top with a dollop of foamed milk.

Don't own an espresso machine?
In a small saucepan, gently heat Torani and milk, whisking until frothy. (Alternatively, microwave Torani and milk until hot, pour into a blender pitcher and blend until frothy, about 30 seconds.) Pour flavored milk into a glass and add coffee. Top with a dollop of foamed milk.

Note: Even if you don't own an espresso machine, you can still brew espresso-strength coffee, by purchasing espresso roast beans for your drip machine.

How often do you hit up the local drive-thru coffee house? Do you find yourself passing through their line around one or two times a day? Wow, think of all the cash they make off of you alone. Now I'm not saying that you should all of the sudden squelch your desire for coffee and never enjoy a fresh latte coffee again for the rest of your days.

However, I am asking you to consider how much you spend on fancy coffee drinks. Let's think about this for a minute. Most latte coffees run between 3 to 5 dollars a pop, therefore you're spending at least 3 bucks a day; more if you're going back for seconds. Now, that's at least 20 bucks a week, which turns out to be 80 dollars a month. So, have you figured out your yearly latte coffee bill yet?
