What is Arabica Coffee
Do you have a favorite brand or flavor of coffee? I have come to like a variety of high quality beans in my years. One of them is arabica coffee. This company offers a quality
bean with a freshly roasted taste. After all, that's what it's all about in my book. Surely you've had a bad cup of coffee in your day. I know that I have had more than a few.
There are said to be more than 6,000 types of coffee grown today, with maybe 25 being the common types. Of those Arabica (Coffea Arabica) and Robusta (coffea canaphora) coffees represent the majority of the world's coffee production with Arabica alone accounting for 60-80%, and Robusta most of the rest. This makes them slightly more common than the Kona or Blue Mountain (both rare and expensive) varieties. Arabica, named for Arabia, is the more expensive (and better tasting) of the two. It grows in tropical areas, at high altitudes.
Arabica cherries (this is what the beans are called while still on the tree) tend to fall to the ground when ripe, and they spoil quickly, so the trees have to be carefully monitored and then cherries picked at the right time. The Arabica tree is also fairly delicate, easily attacked by pests and plant diseases.
Robusta is grown in the eastern hemishpere, also tropical, but at lower altitudes. The cherries remain on the trees after ripening, so don't have to be so closely watched (making for slighly lower costs) and the tress are more robust, making for lower care costs. Robusta tends to have more caffeine than Arabica and has a different flavor. Robusta is blended with other coffees to give them a little more kick. Coffee shops tend to use the Arabica beans, while the old standbys, such as Maxwell House, tend to use Robusta.
Exactly how the coffee is roated also makes a huge difference.
Let's talk about the competitors for arabica coffee. Probably the largest competitor for every java company is Starbuck's. This chain is pretty much the latte equivalent of the drive through burger joints. Now, I happen to really like their coffee and I appreciate the fact that I can always find a Starbuck's and their coffee is always the same. I know how it tastes. It might not be the best, but it is consistent in quality no matter which one I visit. (Which is one mark of a successful franchise, consistency.) I know what I'm in for when I step into Starbuck's coffee house. And their pumpkin spice latte is phenomenal.
Are you ready to try some quality arabica coffee? Hey, this stuff is easy to come by because it's all on the World-Wide-Web. Heck, what isn't on the web these days?
